2021 MANDELA WASHINGTON FELLOW
Moroni, Comoros
FATMA HASSAN
Fatma Hassan holds a bachelor's degree in English literature from the University of Comoros. She is currently in Montpellier, France, pursuing her studies at the Paul Valéry University of Montpellier. Her career inspiration started in her second year of University when she volunteered to teach English as a second language for people in villages who don’t have the means for paid classes. She was then hired as a TEFL facilitator intern for Peace Corps Comoros after graduating from the University of Comoros. After graduating, Fatma wanted to reduce the number of unemployed people in her community, so she decided to open a restaurant and continued her teaching experience. Fatma teamed up with her former classmates and started their own language and leadership center. The goal was to aid students with English, as it’s taught in the 6th grade, and save their local language from disappearing. Upon completion of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, she will use the business skills she has attained to create more opportunities for youth and young women in her country.
