Ten Iowa businesses received a combined $277,500 during the AI Services Challenge from July 28-30 at the BioVentures Center in Coralville. That brings the total value of Amazon Web Services (AWS) artificial intelligence services awarded through the initiative’s three events to $860,500.

The three-day challenge showcased Iowa businesses and was sponsored by the University of Iowa John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (Iowa JPEC), nClouds, and AWS. Each participating business took part in two working sessions.

“AI is changing how businesses operate, and we want Iowa companies to be part of that transformation,” said Dana Rupe, director of Iowa JPEC. “This challenge gives businesses access to the expertise and resources they need to put AI into action, helping them innovate, grow, and remain competitive.”

The 10 participating businesses are exploring AI applications in areas including behavioral safety, accounting, home care, asset management, social services, health care, education, accessibility, retail, and sexual health.

Rather than a competition with winners and finalists, the AI Services Challenge focuses on helping each business identify an opportunity for AI and develop a path toward implementation. Through sessions with AI experts, businesses examine how technology can address challenges, improve operations, and serve customers.

The latest AI Services Challenge continues Iowa JPEC’s effort to help Iowa businesses understand and adopt emerging technologies. Across the three AI-focused events, $860,500 in AWS AI services has been awarded to participating businesses, providing resources and expertise.

The AI Services Challenge will return in the fall of 2026, but dates have not been determined.
