GETTING STARTED
Do I need a startup idea to get involved?
Not at all. Community programming is designed for students at every stage, including the very beginning. Show up curious and we'll take it from there.
Do I need to be a business major?
Absolutely not. The BELL is open to every student at the University of Iowa, regardless of major. Some of our best founders come from engineering, nursing, journalism, and everywhere in between.
How do I join?
Fill out a quick inquiry form and you're automatically enrolled in the BELL community. From there, you can explore programs, attend events, and find your path at your own pace.
Is there a cost to participate?
No. The BELL is free for all University of Iowa students.
PROGRAMS & PATHWAYS
What's the difference between Community and the incubator programs?
Community is open to everyone — no application, no commitment, just show up. The Startup Incubator (Validation and Launch Stages) requires acceptance through BELL Week, including a founder interview. Ideation Stage sits in between — it requires an application, but not an interview, and helps you build toward BELL Week.
How do I know which stage I belong in?
Take our placement quiz. Based on your answers, you'll be directed to either apply to Ideation Stage or apply directly to BELL Week. Not sure at all? Start with Community and we'll help you figure it out from there.
Can I skip a stage if I already have traction?
Yes. If you already have a validated idea, an MVP, or real customer traction, apply directly to BELL Week rather than starting in Ideation.
What if I go through a stage and I'm not ready to advance?
That's completely normal and nothing to worry about. Students can return to a previous stage, continue iterating, or step back into Community programming. Progress isn't linear — and we don't treat it like it is.
How long does each program take?
Community is ongoing — no time commitment required. Ideation Stage is self-paced and ongoing, so you move at your own speed. Validation and Launch Stages are both ongoing as well, with founders participating in end-of-semester reviews to reflect on progress and determine how to continue.
What is BELL Week?
BELL Week is the final step before acceptance into the Startup Incubator, held the first week of every month. It includes a required info session and founder interview, plus optional community events throughout the week. Afterward, you'll either be accepted into Validation or Launch Stage, encouraged to keep building for a future BELL Week, or encouraged to continue through Community programming.
EVENTS
How do I find out about upcoming events?
The best way is the events calendar on this site. RSVP and follow so you never miss what's happening.
Do I have to be in a program to attend events?
No. Most BELL events are open to any University of Iowa student. Some program-specific sessions are reserved for active participants, but community events, pitch competitions, and speaker events are open to all.
Can I bring a friend?
Please do. The more the merrier — and honestly, showing up with a friend is one of the best ways to get comfortable in a new space.
PARTNERSHIPS & OTHER
I'm a faculty member.
How can I bring the BELL into my classroom? We love partnering with professors and campus organizations. Reach out through the contact form and let us know what you have in mind — we'll make it work.
I'm an entrepreneur or professional. How can I get involved as a mentor or speaker?
We're always looking for experienced founders and professionals to engage with our community. Send us a message and tell us a little about your background and how you'd like to contribute.
I'm a journalist or media professional. Who should I contact?
Use the contact form above and select "Media" from the dropdown. We'll get you connected with the right person.
Still not sure?
Just ask.
No question is too small and no situation is too unique. We'd rather you reach out than walk away wondering. Send us a message and a real person will get back to you — usually within one business day.
